Attractive room in family home in a wonderful neighborhood
A lovely, rarely available room for rent for the spring semester or beyond in our North Berkeley home. Your private 130 sq ft bedroom is super-clean and fully furnished, with a comfortable queen-sized bed, end tables, desk & chair, bookcase, as... well as a dresser in the big 20 sq. ft. walk-in closet with ample shelving. Two windows let in the morning sun and look out on a side path to the back yard, A shared bathroom is close by in the hallway.
You would have full access to a well-equipped, eat-in kitchen with brand-new GE appliances--gas stove & oven, French door refrigerator, dishwasher, & microwave--with pots and pans, dishes and kitchen ware for your use. A free washer and dryer are in the eating area as well as all utilities, Wi-Fi, cable--a big savings. Basic kitchen and household supplies, linens and towels, and a weekly cleaning of common spaces are also included.. You would be responsible for your own groceries, toiletries, laundry and laundry supplies.
There is the equivalent of a health club right across the street with the public King Park, year-round heated swimming pool, tennis courts and jogging track. The back opens to a small serene back yard and the fresh flowing Codornices Creek (and occasional wild life), which a renter called his "own little Walden." The yard is shared with the tenants in the back two in-law apartments, quiet, working professionals. We give each other privacy and space, but also look out for each other and occasionally, share a coffee or meal at the picnic table.
With a short stroll down the street, you will meet neighbors with a slice of Gioia pizza, croissant or coffee in hand, or coming up from other specialty stores and the fabulous Monterrey Market, with a bulging bag of the freshest produce in the Bay Area. Or sit in the sun and chat at the popular Espresso Roma. There is a friendly, relaxed Berkeley vibe to this safe, long-established neighborhood with lots of professionals and young families. An easy walk to Solano Avenue or the Gourmet Ghetto on upper Shattuck takes you to grocery stores, bookstores, boutiques, and many Zagat rated restaurants.
AC transit buses regularly run past the house or at the top of the street and quickly get you Downtown Berkeley or North Berkeley Bart, or bike to the UC campus in 15 minutes. An express bus at the corner gets you quickly to San Francisco. Berkeley Walk Score is rated 93 out of 100: "The third most walk-able neighborhood in all of Berkeley." Called "Bikers Paradise" with flat lands and good bike lines, we rate 94 on the Biking score. There is ample free street parking and space in the back yard to leave your bike.
You would be sharing the house with my husband Bev, a human rights activist, and me, a social justice theatre director in Nepal. We are now retired and working from home on various writing and creative projects. We sometimes rent a second bedroom to a visiting scholar for short research stay. Our sweet dog Emmylou is often in the fenced backyard and always inside at night. She is super gentle and friendly, but knows how to stay out of your room (you can see her peeking in at the door in one of the photographs).
We are looking for a neat, independent and friendly renter, often out of the house and busy with his/her own schedule. Secure this popular space with a signed lease and a fully refundable Security Deposit of $1,500. The first month rent of $1,500 is due on move-in. Absolutely no sublets, Airbnb, smoking, drugs, pets and no overnight guests please, unless pre-arranged for out-of-town visitors.
Please email to tell us something about yourself, your general schedule, habits, and interests-- and to schedule a viewing appointment or a Zoom call if all sounds mutually fine. You will need a recent academic department, work or landlord reference. Over the years, besides the USA, we have welcomed renters from Belgium, China, France, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Poland, Serbia, and Spain and internationals are particularly welcome.
