North Berkeley room in 4/2 house

room is available 1/1/25. Rent is $1100/mth, bills range from $50-100/mth depending on the season.

We live in North Berkeley down the street from the amazing Monterey Market in a beautiful house with a great landlord. The house has 4 bedrooms and 2...
bathrooms, a great kitchen with a gas stove, washer, dryer, clothes line, and a dishwasher. There is a living room with a comfy couch and rocking chair. We also have a large dining table that is fantastic to host dinner parties/game nights and a cozy kitchen nook for more casual dining. It is a walkable, safe neighborhood with plenty of street parking (no permits, no street cleaning). It is a 10 minute walk to North Berkeley BART, 20 minute walk to Whole Foods on Gilman, 20 minute walk to the Shattuck Strip (Cheese Board, Safeway, Peets ect), 20ish minute walk to Trader Joe’s on University. Easy access to 80/580 freeways, less than 10 minute drive to downtown Berkeley.

The room is approximately 10x12 with a standard sized closet. The room is large enough to fit a queen sized bed, dresser, bookshelf and desk. It is on the first floor and gets the afternoon setting sun. It stays cool in the summer and gets chill(ier) in the winter (though it will warm up quickly with a small space heater). You will be sharing the downstairs bathroom with one other person.

We are looking for a single person, no couples. There is an indoor/outdoor cat, sorry no other pets. Room available starting 1/1/25. Rent is $1100/mth, bills range from $50-100/mth depending on the season. There are solar panels which keep the electric bill low, but gas is the heater…so winter bills are higher. First and last month rent and deposit due before move-in. References required and will be contacted.

Some special things to know about the house:

There are hardwood floors throughout the house, which makes sound travel. We do our best to be respectful of each other’s schedule and keep noise to a minimum when others are sleeping. We do have varied schedules but are generally settled and quiet by 10 or 11 pm. Earliest risers are between 6:30-7:30 am, though not every day.

We do have a weekly chore chart and expect everyone to participate. Keeping the common spaces clean is always a balance, but we are striving to not let the bar fall below the current standard.

We each have things that live in shared space, but they are minimal and generally functional. We try to leave no trace when we leave a space and minimize clutter. Lots of plants, room for more if you got’em.

The kitchen is well stocked, but space can be made for additions and we are happy to re-organize.

We aren't a super social household. Everyone is in and out, living their lives and recharging at home. We are friendly and converse when gathered in the kitchen, but there isn't a cohesive culture. No one is opposed to changing the culture, but it just hasn't happened yet.

Current housemates:

R-48 yr old, cis-gendered female, trained MFT, working for SF county as an eligibility worker helping single adults get benefits to survive. Works from home 2 days/wk in the shared space. Vegetarian, mostly. Enjoys walking new neighborhoods, exploring parks, making collages, reading, taking care of plants, learning and expanding.

C- A 50 something female, sustainable landscaper, attempting to be kind to people, plants and planet. Enjoys a busy life outdoors and a peaceful retreat at home. Left-handed and leaning. Calm, creative and enjoys cooking.

K–60+ male who works with startups and is author of a book about an idea to reimagine capitalism. The book promotes the use of a performance-based capital structure by companies that raise venture capital via an initial public offering. K is frequently found at his partner’s house nearby, where he shares ownership of a sweet, year-old puppy. He enjoys writing, walking, gardening, dog-walks, and swimming at the Berkeley Y.
