Apartment Description

Cloyne Court is a historic, student-run cooperative house exclusively for UC Berkeley students. Built in 1904 by architect John Galen Howard, Cloyne was originally a residential hotel for faculty and became a student co-op in 1946. Designated a... Berkeley Historical Landmark in 1992, it has been substance-free since 2014, enforcing a strict no alcohol, tobacco, or narcotics policy.

Located just steps from campus near the Goldman School of Public Policy, Cloyne offers an ideal environment for students seeking a quieter, academically focused community. The house features four dedicated study rooms, extended quiet hours, and an Academic Coordinator who organizes events like professor talks, alumni advice seminars, and study groups.

Residents enjoy a large courtyard with picnic tables, a greenhouse, fruit trees, and an outdoor movie theater. Inside, there are comfortable common areas for socializing, studying, or watching TV, plus recreational amenities including a basketball/volleyball court, indoor gym, pool table, game room, music room, and crafting space.

The house hosts community events year-round, such as dances, performances, improv shows, holiday celebrations, and the annual Cloyne Carnival, fostering a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere.

Additional Details:

Rent is a flat rate of approximately $1,135/month, which includes utilities, furnished rooms, food (communal meals), and supplies.

Room assignments are based on seniority; new members should expect a shared bedroom with opportunities to move into singles over time.

Members contribute to house upkeep through weekly labor hours.
