Person of Color Theme House (Castro)

The Person of Color Theme House aims to provide affordable housing to all students in the Berkeley community who are seeking accessible and low-cost living options. It also serves as a supportive space for low-income, first-generation, immigrant,... and historically marginalized students expecially those who identify as People of Color (POC). POC includes, but is not limited to, Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and multiracial communities.
Originally known only as Andres Castro Arms, the Person of Color Theme House was established in 2015 to better serve and empower students of color within the Berkeley Student Cooperative system. The house exists to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for its members while fostering solidarity with communities of color in the Berkeley area and beyond.
Located on the Southside hills of Berkeley, it gives our co-opers one of the best views of the Bay Area every sunrise and sunset. Our house has 5 floor levels that house up to 56 people and has been modified to accommodate so many people at once. Our large kitchen, dining room, and projector room are spacious enough to let you easily navigate throughout the house. Our pool room also offers house members to host pool games with friends. We also have a beautiful front view of our house on Warring St. with a tree swing, bountiful garden, and steps leading up to our porch and large door entrance (Lord of the Rings door).
Queer Circle, movie nights, and house dinners are some of the things we do at the house and we continue to want to have more events for our co-opers. We want to continue to acknowledge our POC house member’s intersecting identities so that we are able to create an inclusive and diverse environment within the house.
